David Carson
Beach Culture was an early editorial project in Carson’s career and is closely linked to surf culture. His layouts combine photography, irregular type and unconventional cropping so that the magazine’s visual language feels connected to the subject rather than imported from a neutral publishing template.

Images are often cut aggressively or allowed to dominate the page. Cropping creates movement and makes the reader feel close to the physical energy of surf culture.

Text and photography overlap, collide or compete. This makes typography part of the atmosphere instead of a separate layer placed on top of images.
Spacing and alignment feel spontaneous, but repetition of certain visual behaviours still gives the magazine a recognisable voice.
