Edward Hopper
Office at Night (1940) shows two people in a high office interior. Walker Art Center records Hopper’s interest in the fleeting view of offices seen from an elevated train and notes three light sources in the painting: overhead light, desk light and light entering from outside.

The high, oblique angle makes the scene feel glimpsed rather than entered. The viewer seems to pass by the window and catch an incomplete moment.
Different lights divide the room and direct attention unevenly. Illumination becomes a way to control tension between figures and objects.
The two figures share a room but do not clearly interact. Their physical distance leaves the relationship unresolved.
Furniture and room edges are cut by the frame, reinforcing the idea that we are seeing only part of a larger situation.

The unusual viewpoint, interrupted crop, separated figures and multiple light sources suggest that something is happening, but none of those details resolves the story. The viewer is made into an observer who must interpret a partial scene.
