Jack-in-the-Pulpit No. IV
Georgia O’Keeffe
Jack-in-the-Pulpit No. IV (1930) is one of a six-painting series based on a flower O’Keeffe studied closely. The National Gallery of Art describes the enlarged spadix against the dark purple interior of the spathe, with only small areas of foliage and sky remaining at the edges.

The flower fills the canvas so completely that it is no longer read as a small botanical specimen. Scale turns close observation into an immersive spatial experience.
Most of the surrounding plant is removed. The viewer is pushed toward the central internal structure rather than given a complete botanical description.
Dark purples, greens and lighter central forms create depth without relying on detailed texture. Colour carries structure.
Curving edges repeat and narrow toward the centre, directing the eye through the form almost like a landscape or passage.
