A Subtlety was installed in Brooklyn’s former Domino Sugar Factory in 2014. Creative Time describes the monumental sugar-coated sphinx-like figure as a response to the building and to histories of sugar production, labour and exploitation.

Sugar is both visually attractive and historically loaded. The material connects sweetness, consumption, labour and violence in one physical substance.
The exaggerated sphinx-like female form draws on racialised imagery. Its monumental presentation forces those stereotypes into public view rather than allowing them to remain background culture.
