Common Sense

Martin Parr

1995–1999· Photography series· contextual research

Common Sense was published and exhibited in 1999 after Parr had built a large body of close-up colour photographs of food, shopping, leisure and consumer objects. Instead of stepping back to describe a whole scene, he repeatedly pushes ordinary details almost into the viewer’s face.

Formal Analysis

01Close-up

Tight framing removes most surrounding context. Food, skin, packaging and objects become exaggerated surfaces, so the viewer notices texture and excess before understanding the wider situation.

02Flash

Hard frontal light flattens depth and makes grease, plastic, make-up and glossy packaging unusually visible. Surfaces become both attractive and slightly aggressive.

03Colour

Strong reds, yellows, pinks and artificial product colours compete for attention. The palette echoes advertising while also making consumption look excessive.

04Editing

Meaning comes from accumulation. One close-up may look funny; repeated images of buying, eating and display turn humour into a broader comment on consumer behaviour.

How the Work Creates Meaning

The series creates meaning by making familiar consumer details visually excessive. Parr does not need to add a written judgement: tight crop, flash and repeated glossy surfaces make pleasure, appetite, waste and over-consumption visible inside the photographs themselves.

Why Study This Artist?

This is strong A Level research for students working with food, consumerism, beauty, fashion, leisure or everyday objects because it demonstrates how a consistent photographic method can turn ordinary first-hand material into a sustained investigation. The useful lesson is not “use bright colour”; it is how repeated visual decisions build a critical viewpoint across a series.

Pearson Edexcel AO1 强调 sustained and focused investigation,以及 analytical and critical understanding。

Research Questions

Next Move

Do, compare, annotate

Photograph one ordinary consumer activity in 20 close-up frames. Make three edits of the same images: neutral, attractive and uncomfortable. Annotate exactly which crop, colour and lighting decisions changed the meaning.
