Small World
Martin Parr
Small World was published in 1995 and grew from Parr’s observation of international tourism. The photographs repeatedly place tourists, landmarks, cameras, souvenirs and crowds into the same frame, treating tourism as a social behaviour rather than simply recording destinations.
Formal Analysis
Landmarks rarely stand alone. Bodies, cameras, signs and other tourists compete with the supposed attraction, shifting attention from “the place” to the act of consuming the place.
Pointing, posing, photographing and waiting become recurring visual evidence. Small gestures reveal how people perform being tourists.
Parr often allows awkward relationships between foreground tourists and famous backgrounds. These collisions create humour without needing an obvious punchline.
Repeated behaviours across different countries make the subject larger than one location. The work becomes about global tourism itself.
How the Work Creates Meaning
Small World creates meaning by showing the gap between an idealised destination and the real behaviour surrounding it. Crowds, cameras and repeated poses transform famous places into evidence of how travel is packaged, photographed and socially performed.
Why Study This Artist?
For A Level projects about travel, place, identity, crowds, tourism or social media, this is valuable because it shows how first-hand observation can become cultural research. A strong project can move from “I photographed a place” to “I investigated how people behave in and represent that place.”
Pearson Edexcel AO1 强调 sustained and focused investigation,以及 analytical and critical understanding。
Research Questions
Next Move
Choose one local attraction, shopping street or school event. Photograph the place itself, then photograph how people use phones, pose, queue and look. Compare which set says more about the culture of the place.
