Untitled

Michael Craig-Martin

1990· Black tape on drafting film· contextual research

MoMA records this Untitled work from 1990 as black tape on drafting film. It belongs to Craig-Martin’s long investigation of line drawings of mass-produced, immediately recognisable objects, developed from a vocabulary he began building in the late 1970s.

Formal Analysis

01Reduction

Shading, colour and surface texture are removed. The image asks how little information is needed before an object is still recognised.

02Line

Even, controlled tape produces a detached contour rather than expressive handwriting. The line describes the object without pretending to be its material surface.

03Transparency

Drafting film gives the drawing a technical, diagram-like quality. This distances the image from traditional observational sketching.

04Familiarity

The subject is an ordinary manufactured object, so recognition happens quickly. That speed allows the viewer to think about representation itself.

How the Work Creates Meaning

The work creates meaning through the tension between an anonymous-looking line and a highly familiar object. The image feels objective, but the artist has still decided exactly which edges are necessary, revealing that even “neutral” representation is constructed.

Why Study This Artist?

For high-quality A Level development, this work is useful because it separates observation from stylisation. Students can record a real object, analyse which visual information is essential, then deliberately refine a repeatable drawing system. That produces visible development rather than a one-step copy of an artist’s final style.

Pearson Edexcel AO1 强调 sustained and focused investigation,以及 analytical and critical understanding。

Research Questions

Do, compare, annotate

Make one detailed observational drawing of a personal object. Trace it four times, removing more information each time. Ask a classmate when the object stops being immediately recognisable and annotate what this tells you about essential form.
