Paula Scher

1990s–· Hand-painted maps· contextual research

Formal Analysis

01Density

Names and data fill nearly every available area. Information becomes texture, so the viewer experiences the map as a visual field before reading individual words.

02Scale

The large physical size forces the body to move between overview and close reading. A map becomes something to enter visually rather than simply consult.

03Handwriting

Hand-painted lettering introduces irregularity into a form normally associated with precision. The map becomes visibly subjective.

04Repetition

Repeated words and place names build rhythm while also showing how information accumulates and overwhelms.

How the Work Creates Meaning

The Maps series creates meaning by turning supposedly objective geographic information into a visibly personal construction. Density, handwritten text and selective information remind us that maps are edited representations rather than neutral copies of the world.

Why Study This Artist?

This is strong A Level research for projects about place, journeys, identity, memory, cities, data or information because it shows how research material itself can become visual material. Students can move beyond illustrating a location and instead investigate what information they choose, omit, repeat and distort.

Pearson Edexcel AO1 强调 sustained and focused investigation,以及 analytical and critical understanding。

Research Questions

Do, compare, annotate

Map one route you know well using only words gathered from your own observation: street names, overheard phrases, memories, signs and times. Make one accurate version and one emotional version, then compare what each communicates.
