Paula Scher began designing for The Public Theater in 1994. The identity became known for bold typography, extreme scale changes and an energetic visual language suited to a public, urban and performance-based institution.

The Public Theater identity communicates its character through typography itself. Extreme scale decides what is read first, condensed letterforms and changing directions create the sensation of urban noise and performance, and the limited black-white-red palette keeps that energy legible. The meaning is therefore embedded in how information is staged, not added afterwards as decoration.
