Personal Values (1952) places familiar objects inside a bedroom but changes their scale and replaces ordinary walls with sky. SFMOMA describes the result as a deliberate challenge to common sense.

The strangeness comes from controlled changes to familiar reality. The oversized comb, glass and match no longer function normally; the sky-covered walls confuse interior and exterior; and Magritte’s calm realistic technique makes these impossibilities feel strangely factual. Meaning is created by changing only a few rules, which forces us to reconsider what an ordinary object or room can represent.
